My Heart Breaks For Them...

Well, what a wonderful time we've had with the kids. Too bad it all had to end. I feel like such a fool. I felt sorry for the kids. They have broken my heart. I was actually getting quite attached to them and come to find out they had taken advantage of me and my husband--a lesson learned. Thank god no one got hurt from this ordeal. Apparently the kids had lied to us; they were not 18 and 19, they were not abandoned as they had said, but they were underage runaways! I even think Dzevada is pregnant (that girl could out-eat any teenage boy). She had told me she missed her period and she needed to pee alot, and her appetite, it was definitely for more than one person.

We pulled into the SAPP Brother truck stop when we decided to get showers for ourselves and the kids. There was a police officer on duty at the truck stop and I guess he had questioned Nemo and Dzevada. The officer then came up to the truck and was talking to Jessica when she out and out, lied... to the officer about how long she knew us--she said that she knew us for a year and I interjected to say to her that she need to tell the truth (I wasn't about to lie for her). That's when I suspected the cop was right about the kids being runaways. Nemo and Dzevada were upstairs in the shower rooms and the cop had left the truck after asking Jessica all kinds of questions (which some of her answers were coming out in lies), and then after he (the cop) left, she wanted to get out of the truck and go talk to Dzevada--I knew something was up at that time, but what could I do? Jeez, what a fool. I still actually like the kids and I'm sorry that they felt they had to runaway, feeling unwanted. Long story short, the kids split as soon as they could get away, the cop took their belongings which was left in the truck (I should have put two and two together when they told me that they had lost part of their stuff along the way, either by leaving it at someone elses house, or losing it--I think this is a reenactment of what transpired in their journey...maybe the cops were catching up to them somewhere else and they left in a hurry, I'm not sure.)

I think my husband and I have learned a good lesson--DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS. Not only is it against company policy, but we could have gotten hurt, or worse, lost our jobs. I'm glad the officer realized it and knew we were innocent victims in this case. I hope the kids get found, and that they don't get hurt. I'm just glad we picked them up and not some horrible monsters. They were actually pretty good kids. I'm gonna miss them.

lesson learned. But the truth? I've picked one up once too...A carival worker who got left behind when his vehicle broke down. But he wasn't lyin! When I dropped him off, there it was...The state fair just getting set up, probably going to open on the next weekend. Still...Hitchikers are a wildcard situation and probably a bad idea. And yes....Against company policy!
